Nog maar een keer aandacht voor MOOC’s. Zie ook het recente artikel Krijgen MOOC’s een ‘F for Failure’? Dat bericht ging over de resultaten aan de Slate University. In deze bijdrage aandacht voor een vernietigend – en lang – artikel van Jonathan Rees, hoogleraar aan diezelfde universiteit. Om met de deur in huis te vallen, Rees zijn mening over MOOC’s: “Widespread online-only higher ed will be disastrous for students - and most professors.”
Rees ziet weinig verschil tussen MOOC’s en traditionele hoorcolleges, anders dan dat MOOC’s geen collegezaal vol studenten, maar tienduizenden studenten bedienen. Om daaraan toe te voegen: “How do you teach tens of thousands of people anything at once? You don't. What you can do over the Internet this way is deliver information, but that's not education. Education, as any real teacher will tell you, involves more than just transmitting facts. It means teaching students what to do with those facts, as well as the skills they need to go out and learn new information themselves.”
Rees vervolgt: “…the most common way to assess learning in the MOOCs offered by the largest providers is a single multiple-choice question after approximately five-minute chunks of pre-taped lectures. If I had told my tenure committee that I taught history this way, I'd be in another line of work right now. Anyone who has the slightest interest or expertise in education would never teach this way, even if they were paid to do so.”
Hij besluit het artikel met de verzuchting: “…a workforce trained without close contact with professors of any kind might as well not attend college at all. Going to the library and reading a bunch of books would be equally effective, and probably a whole lot cheaper.”

Helma van den Berg van Let's Learn! beluisterde de bijdrage van Jeanne Bakker aan de podcastserie BrainBakery. Bakker vertelde over de bedreiging en kansen die we nu en in de toekomst van AI kunnen verwachten. In de podcast sprak zij haar verwachtingen uit voor de toekomst van AI in leren. Helma is het met haar eens. Zoals de gedachte om AI voor gepersonaliseerd leren te gebruiken.
