Liveblog from #LT15UK: Learning, Technology and the future…

By Gerd Leonhard..a leading voice and futurist on a wide range of topics including next-generation digital business models, the opportunities and challenges of a networked society, a sustainable business and cultural ecology, social media etc. His presentation is about the future of learning.

And he starts with… becoming more human. We cannot beat robots and machines. Technology has a great potential, but we need to decide about the direction and about wrong or right. The new normal: velocity, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. Do we, as organisations, think enough about the past, present and future?

Technology and humanity is overlapping. We are already outsourcing our thinking towards our devices. Think about the contact details in your phone. A toothbrush connected to an app that monitors your way of brushing your teeth.. technology is rapidly changing our perception, and how we ‘see’ the world.

Augmented reality… the reinvention of ‘seeing things’. The next phase is to step into an augmented reality and join the game. Imagine the learning opportunities. Imagine what happens when the digital world is combined with our real world? And this is not about the future, this is already available today!

But is ‘more’ and ‘faster’ and ‘free’ always best? What good is all the (online) information available to us? The internet promises to feed our minds with knowledge. What have we learned? That our minds need more than that. Nowadays, you order your sushi in a sushibar, using an app on your iPad. But Gerd is convinced that most human learning will still need a body and the senses, context, mystery, inefficiency, serendipity, accident, boredom. We don’t want to remove that, because it is inefficient.

A question for you: how do you feel about the rise of increasingly intelligent software and apps? 46 percent votes for answer 2, 38 percent went for answer 3.

Thinking about the future:

  • refrigerators reminding us to buy some milk;
  • hearables in the house;
  • a radio you stop and start using your voice.

The future of learning goes from data and information to knowledge and wisdom. The future of work is about the return of highly-human-only skills. Subjective reasoning, imagination, questioning, etcetera. “Machines are for answers, humans are for questions.” Gerd addresses 14 principles of the future organization. Jacob Morgan wrote more about this.
